Hawai’i’s Remarkable Transition with EVaaS

Hawai’i set clean energy goals with electric vehicles as a top priority for state agencies back in 2009 but turning that ambition into actual fleet transformation took time, funding, and the right model.

A decade later, the state and its counties teamed up to pursue a comprehensive electric vehicles as-a-service (EVaaS) approach that enabled full fleet transformation from petroleum to electric vehicles together with the necessary charging infrastructure, and ongoing maintenance into a scalable and affordable, usage-based service.

Since launching the statewide contract in 2020, Hawai’i has deployed more than 200 EVs and a growing network of charging stations helping agencies cut fuel costs, reduce emissions, and make impressive progress towards their 2030 clean-energy targets.
